Finding balance and equilibrium in your life is often more complicated than it sounds. The pursuit of peace and harmony requires the discipline to exhibit restraint and make yourself do the things you need to do. However, it also requires a gentle touch. It’s important to be kind to yourself and patient as you take the time you need to find the balance that is right for you. If you’re feeling unbalanced, and who doesn’t, here are some ideas for where to start when you’re trying to achieve equilibrium.

You might think that finding balance in your life is all about doing what feels good and trusting your instincts, but that simply isn’t always the case. Not all bodies are created the same, and no one is created without some flaws. Sometimes our natural settings are unbalanced and need to be corrected. Sometimes that correction can be made through a change of diet or habits, but it’s normal to need a little help. Whether it’s corrective lenses, supportive hormone balance supplements or medication to help you achieve mental balance, you should never feel ashamed to seek assistance.

Finding mental balance is perhaps the most challenging thing you can try to do. Balancing your emotional and physical needs with the mental stress often associated with achieving those goals requires some discipline and a lot more patience. Meditation and medication can help, but mental wellness is often a reflection of the balance or lack of balance in our physical bodies, the environment around us and the friends we keep.

You may think that balance must be easier for either extroverts or introverts to achieve, but you’d be wrong. Those who get energy from social interactions often struggle to protect themselves from toxic people, or they become toxic people themselves, sowing discord and making unsustainable demands across multiple friends and groups. On the other hand, natural introverts must exert a lot of energy to get the level of social interaction they need in order to maintain their own equilibrium. Even introverts are, on some level, social creatures. Finding a balance between friends and self is a challenge for everyone, no matter their inclinations.

Balance also depends on your environment. If you are, for reasons beyond your control, trapped in a situation where you constantly feel unsafe, are perpetually overworked, or just cannot get a moment of peace and quiet to yourself, you know how hard it is to achieve or maintain any kind of equilibrium in your life. For those who are just realizing that environmental factors may be the source of your feelings of insecurity and imbalance, remember that you need to set boundaries, not just with the people around you, but with yourself. If, for example, you find yourself struggling with anxiety as you check your social media and news feeds every hour on the hour, set a boundary with yourself and cut back on how often you look at those feeds.

Physical
